How do I calculate crushed stone?
Multiply length by width in feet, then by depth in inches. Divide by 324 for cubic yards. Multiply by the stone weight, 1.65 tons per yard for #57 or 1.75 for base stone. A 10 by 20 foot pad at 6 inches of base needs 3.7 yards, or about 6.5 tons.
tons = cubic yards × 1.65 (coarse) or 1.75 (base)
yards from tons = tons ÷ tons per yard
For a drain trench, use Rectangle with the trench length and width, and set the depth to the stone fill depth. Quarries sell it by the ton, so tons is the number to give them.
Weight per cubic yard
Angular quarry stone weighs about 1.5 to 1.75 tons per cubic yard. Clean stone of one size has more open space, so it is lighter. Stone mixed with fines packs those spaces, so it is heavier. Always ask the quarry for the weight of the product you buy.
| Group | Sizes | Tons per yd³ |
|---|---|---|
| Fine | All sands, concrete, asphalt | 1.5 |
| Coarse (gravel or limestone) | 2, 4, 57, 67, 8, 9 | 1.65 |
| Base | 304, 411, screenings | 1.75 |
These factors come from the Kokosing tonnage calculator, an Ohio aggregate producer. Gorham Sand & Gravel in Maine uses 1.5 tons per yard for stone. Gorham calls its figures rough conversions.
Coverage per ton and yard
| Depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton at 1.65 t/yd³ covers | 1 ton at 1.75 t/yd³ covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 98 sq ft | 93 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 65 sq ft | 62 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 49 sq ft | 46 sq ft |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft | 33 sq ft | 31 sq ft |
| 8 in | 41 sq ft | 25 sq ft | 23 sq ft |
| 12 in | 27 sq ft | 16 sq ft | 15 sq ft |
Which size to use
| Job | Stone | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway or pad base | #411, crusher run, screenings | Fines pack hard |
| Driveway top layer | Clean coarse stone | Clean stone drains well |
| French drain, pipe bed | Clean #57 | No fines to clog the gaps |
| Walkway | Small angular stone | Locks together, easy to walk on |
The Gravel Roads Maintenance and Design Manual says good surface gravel is a mix of three parts: stone, sand and fines. Clean stone alone will not hold a hard surface on a road. It also recommends a crown of about 1/2 inch per foot so water runs off.
Facts from the USGS
- The United States produced about 1.5 billion metric tons of this stone in 2024, according to the USGS.
- About 72% was used as construction aggregate, mostly for roads.
- Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania were the top three producing states.
- The average value at the quarry was about $17.50 per metric ton in 2024. That is a value at the plant, not a delivered price.

Common questions
How many tons of crushed stone do I need?
Find cubic yards with length × width × depth in inches ÷ 324. Then multiply by the weight per yard. For coarse stone, Kokosing uses 1.65 tons per yard. A 12 by 40 foot driveway at 4 inches is 5.93 yards, or about 9.8 tons.
How much does one cubic yard weigh?
Most quarry stone weighs 1.5 to 1.75 tons per cubic yard. Gorham Sand & Gravel uses 1.5 for stone. Kokosing uses 1.65 for coarse sizes and 1.75 for base materials like #411 and screenings, since the fines fill the gaps.
What is the difference between #57 stone and crusher run?
It is a clean, coarse stone with no fines, so water drains through it. Crusher run, also called #411 or base, mixes stone with fine dust. The fines pack hard when rolled, which makes it a strong base. That is why base stone weighs more per yard.
How much area does one ton cover?
At 1.65 tons per yard, a ton covers about 49 square feet at 4 inches deep and 65 square feet at 3 inches. At 1.75 tons per yard, it covers about 46 square feet at 4 inches.
Is crushed stone the same as gravel?
Not quite. It is quarry rock broken by machines, so the pieces are sharp and angular. Gravel often means stone rounded by water. The UC Master Gardener article puts it simply: river run is round and broken stone is angular.
What kind of rock is used?
In the United States it is mostly limestone and dolomite. The U.S. Geological Survey says those two made up about 70% of the U.S. total in 2024. Granite was 14% and traprock 6%.
